Yamaha HS5 vs KRK Rokit 5: Which Studio Monitors Are Best?

From home studios to professional studios, you've probably seen the Yamaha HS5 and KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors before. These 2 sets of studio speakers are some of the most popular monitors out there, and for good reason. Both have extremely high audio and build quality along with legendary reputations among beginner and professional music producers alike.

However, how do you decide which pair of monitors is right for you? In this guide, I compared the Yamaha HS5s against the KRK Rokit 5s to help you decide which studio monitors suit your needs best.

Yamaha HS5 vs KRK Rokit 5: Which is Better?

The answer to which studio monitors are better really depends on what you're looking for from your monitor speakers. Do you want the clearest, most sonically accurate representation of your mix? Or do you want certain frequencies to be more prominent than others for more precise mixing? Do you want the ability to tune the speakers to your specific room? Or are you already in an acoustically treated room, so tuning doesn't really matter?

Each of these monitors offers its own set of strengths and weaknesses, so just make sure to keep in mind some of these questions when you're deciding which monitors are right for you and your music studio.

With all that said, let's get into our comparison of the Yamaha HS5 vs KRK Rokit 5.

Yamaha HS5

Price: $399.98 (for the pair)

The Yamaha HS5s are known for their impeccable clarity across the frequency spectrum. They're some of the flattest monitors on the market, meaning they give you the truest representation of how your mix really sounds. Therefore, if you're looking for monitors that will give you the best sonic accuracy, I'd go with the Yamaha HS5s.

There are many benefits to these monitors, but one of the downsides is they lack a Graphic EQ function, meaning they won't sound their best if you use them in a room that's not acoustically treated. The KRK Rokit 5s do have a Graphic EQ function that allows you to tune the speakers to your specific room.

At $399.98, the HS5s are pretty similar price-wise to the Rokit 5s, so it shouldn't be much of a determining factor when deciding which monitors to go with. You should really consider which monitors will be best for you long-term and go with those.

KRK Rokit 5 G4

Price: $378.00 (for the pair)

The KRK Rokit's are some of the best sellers in the industry and sport an iconic black and yellow design. These monitors are known for their punchy and deep bass and therefore are a perfect option for you if you want to produce bass-heavy music like hip-hop or EDM. They also feature a Graphic EQ function which allows you to tune the speakers to sound best in whatever room you're using them in.

While the sound quality is excellent and those low frequencies will definitely stand out in your mix, the KRK Rokit 5s are not as balanced as the Yamaha HS5s. Therefore, with the Rokit 5s you're not getting the most sonically accurate sound. However, the Graphic EQ function does help alleviate this problem slightly since you're able to adjust the room tuning and frequency boosts. That said, the Yamaha HS5s will still give you the most balanced and clear sound available on the market.

The price tag of $378, $22 less than the Yamaha HS5s, makes these the cheaper option, but not by much. Especially since studio monitors are a long-term investment, I wouldn't focus on which monitors are cheaper, and instead focus on which will meet your needs best over the long-term.

Both the Yamaha HS5s and KRK Rokit 5s are extremely high quality and industry-standard studio monitors.
